Hey guys, I'm planning a 5 day (3 full days and 2 half days) road trip from Florence to Rome during my first solo trip to Italy, but i seem to have a lot of trouble deciding if there's too much or too little in each day. I could use some advice here.
My main goal is Etruscan history, nature, and views, taking things slow. I know i want to visit Volterra and Pitigliano. San Gimignano, Monterigionni, Siena, Pienza, Montepulcino and Orvieto are very interesting but not mandatory.
I feel like there's a lot of room to move things around and to add little stops along the way. I'd love to hear your suggestions! Here's what I got so far:
Day 1:
Noon: Pick up car in Florence
Afternoon: Drive down the Chiatigianna and arrive at Volterra around the evening.
Day 2:
Volterra. Visit the museums and absorb the town's rich history and atmosphere.
Day 3:
Early morning in San Gimignano before tourists arrive.
A slow drive down to Siena or Pienza. Visit the town, and overnight there. Or keep driving to Pitigliano.
Day 4:
Hike the Vie Cave in Pitigliano with a guide.
Visit the town (this might take a full day?)
Either sleep there or head to Orvieto.
Day 5:
Slow drive from Pitigliano or Orvieto to Rome
Noon: Drop the car off.
