27 day european contiki budget

Hello,

I am leaving for europe next month and I am going via contiki so all accom,transport has already been paid for. I was wondering if anyone has done Contiki before knows if it is able to be done on a budget.

Would 75 euros a day for spending money be enough? (not including add ons) Just for food, souvenirs and drinks, and extra transport needed. I am mindful some countries im going to are more expensive such as france and italy. But if anyone could help pleaseee

Physical sims for travel?

Hey,

Are there any companies which provide a physical sim that can be topped up for various international trips? I usually buy a local sim once I arrive at a destination, but it would be quite convenient if there was one sim that I could use everywhere that wasn't crazy expensive. My phone isn't compatible with an eSim and all these international sims never provide a physical one, or at least I can't find one that doesn't only provide eSim only.

72 year old parents traveling to Vietnam

Hello, my parents are looking at traveling Vietnam for 7-10 days in October/November. Its their first time traveling in South East Asia. They'd like to see the rural countryside. Small towns/villages. Just get a real feel of the culture. I've been to Vietnam a few times myself and my concern is that because they won't be riding a motorbike around and they will predominantly be using buses to get to places that everywhere they go will be the typical tourist destination that is now overcrowded with tourists. I know a lot of places in Vietnam have lost their charm from over tourism (Halong Bay, Hoi An by the river at night, etc) so I'm just a bit unsure where would be best for them to spend a week and have a nice time.
I was thinking of basing them in Hoi An and doing a couple little trips from there but that time of year looks to be the worst time to travel due to the rain. Also wasn't sure if there would be any nice small towns to visit from Hoi An.
The other option I was thinking about is North. The weather looks better that time of year and they could spend a couple night in Hanoi and do a trip to Ninh Binh or if anyone had any recommendations of nice small towns to visit that aren't too far from Hanoi. Possibly surrounded by rice fields and stuff like that. Stuff that old timers would love to see.
Any recommendations would be awesome. Thanks!

European Summer, 6 weeks, with kids

I think we are finally ready to do this trip. We have 2 kids, 12 and 9. We have all explored Italy well enough that we don’t need to make a stop there. The kids go to the EU 2 times a year on average for the last several years and I think this longer stay will be an exciting adventure for them.

I am looking for some pointers from people who have done this before. We are on the fence of booking a home base in a central location like Switzerland or southern Germany and then traveling to other countries from there. Or to do a true backpack experience and hop from one to the other.

We are very spontaneous and will book hotels and flights last minute but I feel as though we would need some structure on a trip like this so we get all we can get out of it.

Booking a home base has its pros and cons. So does living out of a suitcase for 6 weeks.

I would like to put the kids in some camps along the way. We have done some in Italy and it worked well. Would like to try some in camps in other counties.

I would very much like some pointers. Thank you.

Thinking of going to Aruba! Any thoughts or other Caribbean recs?

Hey y’all! So I (29M) had surgery about three weeks ago, and I’m doing fine now. My surgeon cleared me to travel, swim, soak in water, all that good stuff. I’m off work for the next two months, so I really want to get away and just leave LA for a bit and chill somewhere different.

I’ve been thinking about the Caribbean. For some context, I’ve been to a few islands before. My boyfriend (25M) though has never traveled internationally. He’s been to Hawaii and loved it, especially the food, but he’s not really a swimming in the beach kind of person. I’m not much of a swimmer either, but I love being near the ocean: waking up, sitting under a palapa, sipping a drink, watching the sunrise and sunset, waves in the background. That kind of vibe.

I’m basically still recovering, so I’m looking for something really relaxing. Not super active or busy. Just sun, quiet, and nice scenery.

A little background: I’ve traveled to over 50 countries, mostly in the Middle East and Africa. So while I’m not new to travel at all, the Caribbean isn’t somewhere I’ve explored as much. The last time I went was about two years ago, so planning a beach trip like this honestly feels a little rusty for me. I’m kind of re-diving into it, and realizing that planning a Caribbean trip is a whole different mindset.

Places I’ve been and liked: - Turks and Caicos: Loved it. White sand, clear water, super chill hotel-focused vacation. - Roatán: Also amazing. Beautiful beaches, great food, amazing snorkeling culture fun nightlife. - Puerto Rico: Amazing food, but it felt a bit too much like Miami with the crowd and social scene. - Bahamas: Not really my vibe. It felt very party-heavy and packed. But, full disclosure, I stayed in Nassau. - Colombia (Caribbean side): Cool to visit, but again, very catered to tourists.

We were thinking about Belize at first, but from what I’ve seen online, the beach scene didn’t seem as relaxing or picturesque as I expected. Where are the sands?? lol

Now we’re looking at Aruba. It seems promising with lots of hotel options along the strip, great and beautiful beaches, access to good food, and it looks pretty easy to get around. We’re planning to rent a car, but it also looks super walkable near Eagle and Palm Beach, which I like. I don’t like being stuck in a hotel the whole time, so having things nearby is a plus.

Just wondering if anyone here has thoughts on Aruba or other suggestions for Caribbean destinations that are chill, beautiful, and not super crowded, but still accessible enough for someone like my partner who’s never left the country before.

We’re planning to go in the next month or so. Appreciate any input!

I recently applied for a tourist e-visa for Vietnam and got it approved, with validity until April 28, 2025. However, I’d like to extend it until May 1, 2025.

Has anyone gone through the process of extending a tourist e-visa before? I’d appreciate any advice on the steps involved and whether an extension for just a few days is possible.

Or do I need to reapply for a new visa with a longer period?

Or a new visa from April 28-May 1st?

Spain Travel in August: Unique Activities?

Hi All!

I was wondering if you could share some unique activities that can only be done in Spain. In my research I have only found watching a flamenco dancing and bull fighting show. I would avoid the bull fighting for obvious reasons. So the only unique activity I've found thus far the flamenco dancing show.

Context: I am thinking of traveling to Spain in August but I am struggling to find enough unique activities to occupy a week of vacation there. I'm trying to find strong reasons to visit Spain, but I'm having a hard time doing so.

I'm not interested in site seeing. So I'm not interested in seeing the architecture, going to museums, etc... I would go to points of interest while I'm in Spain, but it's honestly not a core interest of mine.

I love trying new and unique foods and cuisines in other countries but I believe I won't have many options in Spain since I'm vegetarian. I'm aware there are some options like tapas, but I'm not sure if Spain's vegetarian tapas is a strong reason to visit. I also don't drink, so wine tasting isn't something I can do either.

I do enjoy doing generic activities like hiking, kayaking, etc... in general but when I'm visiting a new country I would want to do unique activities that are specific to that country instead. For example going to the Blue Lagoon in Iceland, going to an elephant sanctuary in Thailand, etc... The main unique activities I found for Spain are seeing a flamenco dancing and bull fighting show. So it would be great to know if there are more unique activities to do that can only be done in Spain.

I really want to find more reasons to visit Spain since I hear so many great things about the country! So I'd be grateful to hear what unique activities people have done there. Thanks!

Expedia is either very badly designed or intentionally advertising lower prices knowing they are now outdated.

The following thing just happened to me with two separate flight searches:

1. I searched and chose a flight.
2. As soon as I confirmed the fair, I got an alert saying the price had increased by around $400.
3. I closed the app, re-opened it, and searched for the flight again.
4. The price had gone back down, but the moment I selected it, I got a price increase alert again.
5. I checked the actual airline's website, and the lowest price was the increased price from Expedia.

So Expedia is refreshing the flight prices at a certain point during the booking process, but is not retaining that data, instead using older (and lower) flight prices. This feels deliberate, as though they are luring people in with low prices and then springing a price increase on them once they've gone partway through the process.

Worse, there's no accountability. I now don't have the exact wording, but it was something like "The price increased while you were booking." This is a lie. It increased before I even searched for the flight, but Expedia wasn't up-to-date.

IDK. I have been a pretty loyal Expedia user but this is shady as hell. Has anyone got an innocent explanation for this, or is this just how they operate now? I guess I'll have to just search individual airlines or use Google Flights.

Not sure this quite qualifies as a horror story, because on one hand we booked it through the airline and it was fine, but on the other hand this was a family emergency and Expedia created a flurry of frantic phone calls while we tried to sort out flight discrepancies that were directly caused by this.

Crossing the border to Serbia from Kosovo

So, from what I read it's not possible to enter Serbia via Kosovo because the border police want the entry serbian stamp on your passport. They don't recognize Kosovo as a country and so theoretically you already are in Serbia without a document which can explain how and why you are there....

But I'm Italian, and since we are allowed to go to Serbia just with our ID document (avoinding the stamp procedure), what if I show that to border police instaed of my passport? I guess it should work right?

I have a connecting flight through Istanbul—what are my options amid all the protests?

So, I’ve been following the protests and really don’t want to get caught in the crossfire. I’m flying from Dubai to Toronto with Turkish Airlines and have a 22-hour layover in Istanbul. The initial plan was to visit the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia, get some rest, and then catch my next flight—but now I’m not sure.

I’ve seen some very threatening posts on social media about tourists being targeted, primarily by the opposition supporters for supporting the Turkish economy.

I don’t want to be another “Is it safe to travel to Turkey?” person, but I’m just exploring my options—sitting in the airport terminal for 22 hours isn’t feasible, especially with family.

Any advice?

Trip to the UK, looking for feedback

Hello, I am traveling for the first time with my 16 year old son. I will be going to the UK in October. I have created an itinerary and didn't know if anyone had advice/tips and if I am doing an awful job here. Please, any advice is appreciated, and if you have tips on what I should visit and places to eat at, that would be great! : (edited out some info, changed some times for safety reasons)

II. Friday

a. Plane arrives at 9AM EST in London

b. Disembark plane, and take Heathrow Express into London, about a 60 minute ride to Hotel, will take an uber from the train station

i. (3 nights in hotel)

c. Arrive at Hotel by about 11:00 AM EST, drop bags off until check in time (if hotel will not keep luggage, Kings Cross Station has a back hold for a fee). Time to explore London!

d. Take Taxi to the British Museum, about 15 minute drive

i. 11:15AM – 2:30PM - Spend about 3 hours at the museum

e. Time for Lunch!

i. 3:00PM – 4:00PM – Late lunch, open to suggestions to see what we are in the mood for

f. Head to the London Eye

i. 4:15 – 5:30 PM - Cost is about £60, ride is only about 30 minutes

g. Head back to the Hotel, about a 25 minute drive

i. 5:30PM – 6:00PM to go to hotel

ii. Check in to hotel, rest, shower, get ready for dinner

h. Time for dinner!

i. 7:00PM – 9:00PM – Drive to dinner, open to suggestions, then back to the hotel for bed, such a long day

III. Saturday

a. Wake up! Shower! Get ready for the day! Eat Breakfast!

d. Stonehenge & Bath, UK

i. We will be seeing Stonehenge, and should arrive at about 3:00PM (about £60)

e. Tuesday

i. Wake Up! Time to explore Bath!

1. Check out of Hotel at 8:00AM

1. Time to drive to York, a 4 and a half hour drive. We will stop on the way to see some small things here and there, see some of the English country side, villages, pubs, etc. Go with the flow!

a. This is a 2 and a half hour drive, so will arrive by about 8:00PM

4. Check in to hotel (2 nights)

f. Wednesday

i. Edinburgh

1. Wake up at 8:00AM, eat breakfast, time to explore Edinburgh

Barcelona to Malaga suggestions

Hi there, at the end of july, me and my girlfriend will land in Barcelona, rent a car and be on the road heading to Malaga for a whole week. (We are meeting family in Malaga after that).

We are looking for recommandations on stuff to see/do during that week. We like day hikes, visiting cute and not too crowded towns, animals, kayaking/SUP, good food, breweries.

Only things we have on the list is hiking Sierra Nevada (still don't know exactly where) and visiting Granada, which seems like a no-brainer, even though it is a big city.

We haven't bought our tickets yet so we're not closed on the idea of just landing in Malaga and visit around there it if it turns out that there's more to do in this area

Is it worth to rent a car in France?

After visiting Paris, I would like to see Etretat, Mont-Saint-Michel and Chambord Castle, without going back to Paris everyday, otherwise I will lose too much time. Going by car is the fastest option, but it seems to be expensive and driving in another country can be confusing. Is it viable to make an itinerary only by train in 3 days (Paris > Etretat > Mt St Michel > Chambord Castle > Paris)?

Best nightlife in Asia

Hello everyone,

We’re traveling to Thailand in April and want to combine it with another destination that has a great nightlife scene.

I’ve visited Thailand 15 times and know Bangkok quite well. We’re considering a couple of places for a weekend trip: • Ho Chi Minh • Phnom Penh

Last year, we went to the Philippines and found it quite calm compared to Thailand. We visited Boracay, El Nido, and Manila (though it wasn’t the weekend).

Can you suggest any worthwhile places in the region that we can fly to?

We’re in our late 30s.
