Need help with a North American itinerary

https://ift.tt/f9wF72j

Hey. I'd appreciate some help with the planning of a trip to Canada, USA and (hopefully) Mexico this summer. I've a flight to Vancouver booked already and accommodation booked for 6 nights but that's it. My plan is to take the train to Seattle and stay there for 4 or 5 nights, Portland by train and stay there 3 or 4 nights, overnight train to San Francisco (3, 4 or 5 nights), train to Santa Barbara (3 nights) and then train to Los Angeles where I'll stay for 5 or 6 nights. This is where I'm stuck and could do with some help. I definitely want to go to Chicago, New Orleans and New York. Other cities I've considered are Las Vegas, San Diego, Charleston, Philadelphia St. Louis, Boston, Albuquerque, Salt Lake City, Phoenix and Flagstaff. Other than LV, San Diego and Boston in that list, I don't really know much about the others or if they're worth visiting or not. FYI I can't drive and will be solo so transportation will have to be done by train, bus or plane. I'm happy enough with the route I've chosen up until Los Angeles but perhaps you could let me know how many days/nights each place is worth staying too? I'm not too interested in Las Vegas but I believe it's a good base for going to the Grand Canyon. San Diego I'd quite like to go to and if I was to go I'd love to cross the border into Tijuana but it seems like Los Angeles has the best train connections to the rest of the country. I would somehow love to see Mesa Verde if that is plausible without a car? Any help at all would really be great as I'm kind of stumped. Thanks
