Hello, fellow travelers! Wife and I (US) will be visiting a couple of friends in Madrid in January of next year. We did an alligator route and will be flying into Lisbon and out of Madrid 10 days later. We keep kicking around a couple of ideas on how to fill those ten days, but I think we want to stay in Lisbon for some amount of time, take a train to a small town or city between Lisbon and Madrid (possibly two?), and then finish our trip out in Madrid.
I have done some research on train routes between Lisbon and Madrid, but thought I would see if anyone here (a) has done something similar; and (b) has any recommendations on towns to stay?
Would renting a car be a better option? We have driven in foreign countries before, but we really enjoy taking the train.
