Hello all!

Visiting El Salvador soon and undecided if I need to rent a car. I typically follow what other backpackers and hostel recommend, and often they’ve recommended a means/transportation for the areas to explore (such as buses and tours), so wondering if the hostels in El Salvador are similar.

I am also undecided between 7 and 10 days there. I know it’s a fairly small country so is 10 days overkill?

South Of France Trip in July - itinerary help

Hi! I am going to be in the south of france for a total of 10 days after a summer camp. I've been doing endless research online and feeling very overwhelmed. We really only have 8 days after we account for traveling (coming into Nimes from Figeac). I've included the towns we want to visit and stops. What are your thoughts on the itinerary?

→Nimes
~ L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue
~ Roussillon
→ Gordes (Abbaye de Sénanque)
→ Valensole (lavender fields)
→ Sainte-Croix-du-Verdon (kayak Verdon Gorge)
→ Aix-en-Provence (Cezanne walk)
→ Cassis (Calanques National Park, maybe a hike or boat ride?)
→ Antibes (picasso museum)
→ Nice
→ Villefranche-sur-Mer OR
Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat
→Eze

I was planning on basing around the luberon valley or Nimes for the first half, maybe stay in Aix en Provence or Cassis as a base for a few, and then base in Antibes. We will rent a car and take day trips. Any input on where to stay?

A few must haves:
*relaxing/swim on the beach day
*explore luberon valley, particularly the lavender fields & flower fields
*drink provencial rose/wine maybe even go to a winery?
*explore a few classic french village towns as well as a few beach towns/seaside
*go to a market (flower, fruit, etc)

Has United ever denied checking you in to try to fly Standby because you had checked bags???

I was flying from Bozeman through ORD to my home airport today and despite being first on the Standby list, they told me I couldn't fly Standby on United if you are checking bags. Has this happened to anyone else?

I called United reservations and happened to get a Wonderful 1K agent , who said that was flatly false. She had me put her on speakerphone to help guide the agents in the process, and all 3 desk agents were rude to me AND the United reservation specialist. To boot, somehow the agents at BZN "boarded" me on the earlier connecting flight out of ORD I was on the Standby list for, which cancelled my seat on my original connecting flight later in the day. When I got on the plane at BZN I had a connecting boarding pass. When we landed it was cancelled.

Miraculously there were still seats left on my OG connecting flight and I was rebooked, checked in and got lucky with nobody sitting next to me on a nearly full flight. Hallelujah. And the 2nd United reservation agent was also amazing. I've flown United for 25 years and never experienced anything remotely similar.

This post isn't to bash United, I'm genuinely trying to find out if anyone else has ever been told by United desk agents they can't even attempt to fly Standby because they have bags to check.

PS- Since I ended up spending 6 hours at BZN, I asked AA, JetBlue and Delta about Standby travelers and checked bags. All of them allow it and were dumbfounded by my situation.

At the end of the month, I’ll be spending two weeks in Greece, ferry-hopping a few islands with a friend. I have a couple of credit cards with no international transaction fees and plan to use those for most routine purchases. But I want to withdraw some euros while I’m there. Do I really need a Revolut card or similar or can I just use my regular ATM card? I fully expect routine fees and will keep my cash withdrawals larger and less frequent, I just want to avoid any crazy fees that are going to make me cry. Any advice?

10-day Europe itinerary critique: Amsterdam → Germany → Belgium → Paris

Hi everyone,

I’m planning my first Europe trip and trying to make sure the middle section isn’t too rushed. Some parts of the itinerary are locked because we’re meeting friends.

The following cannot be changed:

Oct 21–22 – Amsterdam

Oct 23–24 – Willingen, Germany (meeting friends)

Oct 31 – Fly home from Paris

So the flexible part is after Germany and before Paris.

Current idea:

Oct 21–22 – Amsterdam

Oct 23–24 – Willingen

Oct 25–26 – Cologne

Oct 27–28 – Belgium (debating where, heard bad things about Brussels)

Oct 29 - OPEN (possibly another Paris night)

Oct 30 – Paris

Oct 31 – Fly home

My questions:

Should we stay 2 nights in Bruges and day trip to Ghent?

Or base ourselves 2 nights in Ghent instead?

Is Brussels worth an overnight, or better as a quick stop?

Does this pacing feel reasonable or are we moving around too much?

We enjoy:

great scenery

walkable cities

good food and beer

cool atmosphere at night

Trying to avoid packing up every day if possible.

Appreciate any advice!

Advice for USA trip to Japan (jet lag)

Hey guys. Tomorrow I will be flying to Japan at 2:30 PM from DFW. I have a few questions about jet lag:

1. How do I prepare and try to adjust as quickly as possible and to reduce the effects of jet lag when I get to Japan? I’ve heard things like depriving yourself of sleep the night before so you sleep according to Japan time on the flight. But I’m not sure about anything, since idk anything above the time zone difference that is between Japan and the US (idk how westbound and eastbound and etc works regarding how it affects you and stuff)

2. This is more important, since I’m extremely busy in school and when I come back on a Saturday, school starts for me on Monday, so I need to be locked in and ready. I’ve heard how return flights are horrible, but how do I best mitigate jet lag within the 1-2 days I have? How do I make my first week of school back bearable?

Not sure whether to travel to Istanbul after the second missile in Turkey

I have a flight booked from the UK to Istanbul this Thursday and returning Sunday. I know the missile incidents happened far from Istanbul, but I’m not very familiar with the region or geopolitics and not sure how to interpret the situation.

My main concern is escalation and whether that could disrupt flights or make it difficult to leave Turkey over the weekend, or in a worst case scenario affect safety in Istanbul itself.

Just wanted to ask whats my best bets going YYZ to Tokyo, April 25-May 9?

Ive done some research and have standby travel on United so I was wondering which hub to go from? We were thinking either EWR or IAD but have heard SFO/DEN would be our better bet in terms of loads (2 on standby and 3 confirmed).

I‘m chronically checking loads day before/day of but its too far out to do that.

My other route was going porter to YVR on standby and taking confirmed ZIPAIR to NRT.
