I used Smiles&Miles points to upgrade a flight segment to J on Turkish Airlines. Now I will need to change the flights. How can I keep my points or apply the upgrade to the newly booked flight?

First of all, yes I know that I will need to speak to Turkish customer service. However, right now it is difficult to get through. Because my travel is still 7 weeks away, I'm not calling yet. I just wanted to get some insight on how to handle this and what to expect.

At this point Turkish has not canceled or changed the flight. But due to other circumstances, I will not be able to use the flight schedule I have now. Something will need to be changed. I know that no matter what, I will NOT be taking the exact flight that has been upgraded. It will likely be the same route, but a different date.

My upgraded flight is ORD-IST, in the middle of May. At this point we don't even know if travel will be possible, but I'm planning to go if it is. However, I do need to change my schedule; that much I know. I expect to get it changed for free, but how will the upgraded segment work? Will Turkish automatically restore my points to my Smiles&Miles account? Will customer service be able to apply the upgrade to the rebooked flight? Or will the points be tossed?
