I’m 20 and going to Peru by myself in two weeks and I have a misspelled passport.
Back when I was about 16 or 17 my mom took my sisters and I to get our passports issued—just because. For whatever reason, the agent who processed all of our information screwed up my passport (misspelled my name by one letter, i.e Kieran to Kleran) and swapped my sisters’ passport pictures. The mistake for my sisters’ was more blatant so we had that fixed immediately. We noticed mine later on but never had anything done because not only would we have to pay for their mistake but we weren’t planning on traveling anytime soon so we just left it be.
Flash forward to this time last year, I was going down to Mexico from AZ with some friends and we were crossing the border. This trip was somewhat short notice so I didn’t have time to change my passport. I was a nervous wreck crossing the border back into the States because I thought I was going to get in trouble for my “false” passport. The US Border Patrol agent didn’t even bat an eye when he saw it. So based on that precedent I don’t know how I should go about this situation. I know going from the US to Mexico is a lot different than the US to Peru. Should I just act like I didn’t know it was misspelled and tell my airline it was a silly mistake? Should I go to my nearest passport office and get it changed with expedited service (and pay a $60 fee)? Should I just do nothing and hope I don’t get caught?
Sorry these might be stupid questions but honestly I’m a broke college student and $60 is steep for me (especially for someone’s mistake from a few years ago) and I also don’t want to get in trouble for this.
