Safest way to drive from the US to Mexico City?

https://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Hey /r/Travel! I'm driving from the US (Las Vegas) in my truck to do some camping and climbing (Citlaltépetl, Iztaccihuatl, La Malinche...) in central/southern Mexico. Reading the US State Department's travel warnings about Mexico, it makes northern Mexico seem fairly dangerous. I'm wondering what the safest route is to drive from the US border to Mexico City (I have limited time so I will largely be driving straight from the border and not stopping much along the way). Largely I'm between Highway 45 via Juarez or 85 via Laredo, but open to any route. I already asked this over in /r/Mexico but I figured I'd try and get some other opinions over here. I also would love to hear from anyone who has traveled to northern Mexico recently. Thanks in advance!
