ETA - US to Ireland

false

I am traveling next month to Ireland (not Northern Ireland at all) from the US.

I believe I do not need an ETA. However:

  1. Let's say my flight to Dublin is diverted to London due to bad weather and I will be stuck in London for a least a day. (No idea how likely this would ever be but the winter weather has been quite bad around Europe.)

If I don't have this ETA, I can't leave the airport - correct? I really wouldn't want to sleep in the airport and would like to get a room if I could find one, so I would need one.

  1. I thought I went to the gov.uk site and there was an option to see how long it would take to get this. (On the app, I don't see this option.) I got to the end - before payment - cost was 19.99 but there were only 3 options displayed - one with a minimum of 74.99 added on - I think it was 4 hrs? and more $ if I wanted it even faster.

How much should this cost and how long would it take if I have 3 weeks before I might need it?

Is it realistic that if I would need an ETA, I could apply for it at that time on the app and wait a few hours?
