My fiancé and I are trying to decide where to have our post-wedding trip. We're getting married in August and honeymooning in mid/late September. We've had some general ideas (Japan, Vietnam, Taiwan, New Zealand), but also thought to ask around to see what others recommend. My fiancé has a British passport, I have a U.S. passport; we're both historically knowledgable. In addition to English, fiancé speaks German, I speak French.
Here are our confines:
-No European locations (I used to be a Europe-based travel writer!)
-Dietary restrictions: I've been on the pescatarian / vegetarian spectrum for the last 20 years. Fiancé is vegan but can move to vegetarian while traveling. Both of us want to be immersed in culture, but red meat and chicken is a hard no. That being said, we LOVE to eat, so we'd love to go somewhere where we can explore the native cuisine without a ton of substitutions or fuss.
-Budget: We've done a lot of traveling, which usually involves packed itineraries and sacrifices in comfort, but for a trip of this nature, we want a level of "vacation" that our travel usually doesn't involve. As such, we'd like to stay at 4-5 star hotels, be able to access comfortable transportation, and have some nice meals out. The exact dollar amount of our budget is unclear (waiting on wedding gifts and all that), but probably somewhere in the $5-7k range.
-Cultural aspects: we are both pretty serious about art, design, architecture, music. While the trip will be more relaxed than most, we both actively want to learn a lot. We're both academics with strong history knowledge, and really want to engage with the culture and people of the places we visit. We want to go somewhere with a lot of culture, but we don't want to spend a ton of time in a chaotic urban center.
-Environment: Waterfront would be ideal (lake, ocean, river, etc.). Ultra-hot is a no-go for me. We can deal with cold. We love beautiful nature, but aren't super gung-ho about backpacking or rock climbing or anything like that.
Any recommendations? Some of my favorite places I've been have been Croatia, Scotland, maritime Canada, French Riviera.
Our current ideas include Japan, Taiwan, New Zealand, Vietnam, Brazil. Open to hearing about anywhere! And open to visiting 2-4 locations in one trip!
