We were gifted a Hyatt gift card. It turns out, they are almost impossible to redeem. Hyatt's official policy is that gift cards are cash and can only be used in person, at the hotel. You cannot redeem them online or over the phone. Thus, to use a gift card to book a room your only choices are (1) book a significantly higher priced refundable room using your credit card, and then apply the gift card at check in. Of course, the higher price is likely to negate the price of the gift card. Or (2) don't book in advance and hope that you can get a room day of, and pay with the gift card in person. Additionally, you can only redeem these gift cards at select properties in the US, Canada and Caribbean. And select is the operative word here. Most of the hotels owned by Hyatt (ex. Secrets) won't accept the gift cards.
I'm not actually sure why anyone would buy a gift card of their own accord, but if you are considering getting one for someone else as a gift, don't bother.
