My 65 y/o mom has worked low wage jobs for 30 years, and upon her upcoming retirement near October, Im planning to treat her to a trip. She's always wanted to visit Europe.
She has a bad knee and isn't able to walk long distances so I'm looking for recommendations on cities that are compact, good public transportation. She is interested in baroque and rococo architecture. Clean streets are also important for her to like a city (she hated NYC).
I'm wondering if a week-long cruise to a few cities might be nice for her.
I would appreciate any recommendations! Thank you!

I have traveled relatively extensively through central Mexico, including all over Mexico City, Morelia, Taxco, Teotihuacán, Cuernavaca, many pueblos mágicos. I see a ton of hype on Reddit for San Miguel de Allende, but when I look at photos, it does not look like it’s that much more unique than Morelia or Taxco, but I also do not want to judge it harshly because I have never been. I am just wondering, where puts it above the places I have visited already? Is it going to blow me away if I’ve already seen those other places? Someone who has been there before, please chime in, I am interested.
So I realise most people here will be from bigger countries & therefore this won’t be a problem for most, but what are you supposed to do when travelling to a country that your country doesn’t have an embassy in?
I’m a citizen of Trinidad & Tobago & we only have a handful of embassies around the world. Fortunately this has never happened, but what if I lose my passport in one of the many, many countries without an embassy? For some I can figure that you’re meant to use the closest embassy; like if something happened to me in Spain I should contact the Trinidadian embassy in Belgium since that’s still in the EU. But what if I was in Australia? We don’t have a single embassy in Oceania.
So who should be your first point of contact in these types of situations? Do you reach out to your country’s embassies in random other countries? Contact the embassy of a neighbouring country & pray they help? I’d appreciate any suggestions
What is the best time of day to get nice natural lighting for photos of Hohensalzburg up on the hillside?

Basically the title, my husband and I are going to be driving through Provence and the Riveria in September and are torn on which car to rent. We are mainly concerned with the drive through the mountains to the Verdon Gorge. A mini seems like a better option for that, and we like the idea of a convertible. But the rest of the time we will not be doing any treacherous driving so an SUV (Nissan Qashqai or similar) might be better with our luggage. This is out first time driving in Europe from the US. Any thoughts, opinions, advice? I'm not personally familiar with either model of car - I've seen minis before but never been in one.
I just booked a round trip ticket from EWR to ARN. I'm gonna go to Helsinki and Tallinn first and then finish up the trip in Stockholm. I figured it made the most sense to not even bother leaving ARN and go straight to Helsinki so I've been looking at one way flights and realized I've never actually done this (not sure if it's the same as if you have a layover). My flight from EWR is supposed to get in at 7:20a, but is frequently delayed. I figured the safest bet was to book either a 10a flight to HEL or a 12:05p. Would the 10a be cutting it way too close?
Hello all!
My friend and I are planning a trip to Mexico for early next year. We are looking for a beach town in Mexico that is not super touristy, has good food, good nightlife, a nice beach to surf on, and plenty of people to meet. If anyone has any suggestions on any places that would be great! Thanks in advance
Hello there;
I booked a trip to Europe in the beginning of July.
I will arrive in Paris (CDG) early morning and departure from Zurich (ZHR) 12 days later, mid day. I will I have 11 full days to explore (not counting the day I'm leaving, since it will be all about waking up and heading to the airport.
Anyway, My family want to quickly visit the well know attractions in Paris (such as Eiffel tower, Arch of Triumph, Palace of Versailles) and then head to Switzerland where we do plan to spend the majority of time, 5 to 7 days perhaps?
And this is where help is needed :-)
The only things we know for sure we want to visit are:
We are traveling with a toddler so extreme hiking is not an option.
The idea is to experiment a bit of both: the mountains and the city life while optimizing the schedule and making sure we don't loose a lot of time moving from place to place, hotel to hotel.
I don't mind renting a car in Switzerland if that will help me manage time and make our life easier since we have a baby with us.
By the way, my folks are not into fancy restaurants, they will pick pizza and McDonalds over fancy food any time.
I'm a bit overwhelmed by this hole thing, first time traveling for a country we don't know enough to plan anything or to even determine the region we should be looking for accommodations so any help/advice you can offer is really appreciated. Thanks in advance.
I started my Europe trip a month ago and I lost my phone in Belgium. Therefore I bought a new one to replace my lost phone in the Apple Store of Amsterdam. The staff told me that I could get a tax refund at my final destination before leaving the EU.
Tomorrow I will leave the EU from Germany. Can I still get the stamp from the custom for the tax refund if my phone is used? Given that it was bought in the EU and I did not stay here for long. Thank you very much
The situation is thus: Despite believing that I had checked and secured my residence permit before leaving the Schengen Area earlier this week, I got back into the UK and realised that I do not have it. My partner, who lives in the EU permanently, found it for me and mailed it to me -- but it will not arrive in time for my flight tomorrow.
I have printed off sheets of documents to prove that I live in Germany. I have University enrollment certificates, bank statements, rental contracts, health insurance certificates. I have my University ID card as whilst as my TK health insurance card. And despite not having my residence permit, I do have the slip of paper that it came with that states my name, the university I attend and how long the validity of my permit is (this slip of paper is also signed and stamped by the local German authority). I also have pictures, back and front, of my residence permit on my phone.
Could I still take my flight tomorrow?

it looks like the max amount allowed on a carry on is 100Whr but I'm confused because unless you look at the spec in details most don't list that in the specs but more so by like 40,000mah (What I have) which that one is 145W/hr

Wondering if anyone knows how accessible Greyhound would be for a 6 hour trip? I had knee surgery a couple of weeks ago and am cleared to travel, but am worried about legroom.
I know they have seating in the front for folks with disabilities but I can't find measurements.
Thanks!

A store owner in South Carolina charged with murder this week after shooting a teen he wrongly thought stole water has shot at suspected shoplifters two other times in the past eight years and not faced charges, authorities said.
In 2018, Rick Chow confronted a shoplifter at his Xpress Mart Shell station in Columbia and the man attacked him, Richland County deputies said. Chow fired two shots and the man was wounded in the leg, investigators said. The man pleaded guilty to charges in the case.
In 2015, Chow fired several shots at a vehicle after he tried to stop someone he suspected of shoplifting, and the suspect got into the vehicle and threatened to shoot Chow, deputies said. No one was hurt.
In both cases, authorities said Chow's actions were not criminal. Self-defense law in South Carolina requires the shooter doesn’t instigate the incident, believes he is in imminent danger and has no way to avoid that danger.
Deputies decided that was not the case Sunday, when they said Chow and his son chased a 14-year-old from his store and killed him with one shot to the back. Chow is charged with murder. Prosecutors said once the investigation is finished and police present their findings, they will consider additional charges against Chow or his son.
ALEX MURDAUGH PLEADS NOT GUILTY TO SWINDLING DEAD HOUSEKEEPER'S FAMILY, OTHER CRIMES
Chow thought the boy had shoplifted four bottles of water, but investigators said store video shows Cyrus Carmack-Belton, who was Black, put the bottles back in the cooler. After an argument, Carmack-Belton ran off the store property and was still running away when he was killed, Sheriff Leon Lott said.
A gun was found near the teen's body, and Chow's son told his father that Carmack-Belton was armed after the youth fell as he ran, Lott said. But the sheriff said there was no evidence the boy ever pointed the weapon at Chow or his son.
The sheriff's department didn't release additional information about the two other shooting incidents. They said deputies have been called to Chow's store in suburban northeast Richland County hundreds of times over the past five years for assaults, shoplifting, personal theft, motor vehicle theft, vandalism, robbery and burglary.
A number of media outlets have made open records requests for police reports from those incidents, and authorities say they are working to gather them.
Chow, 58, is awaiting a bond hearing at the Richland County jail. His lawyer has said he is not talking about the case at this time. Chow faces 30 years to life in prison if convicted of murder.
Chow owned the gun legally, but witnesses and surveillance video provided no evidence that he was in fear of his life, Lott said.
"You don’t shoot somebody in the back that is not a threat to you," the sheriff said.
Anguish and grief spread after the shooting through the African American community in Richland County, where nearly half the population is Black.
The state's only Black congressman, Democratic Rep. Jim Clyburn, said Carmack-Belton's family should be celebrating his completion of the eighth grade and heading to high school instead of mourning him at his funeral Saturday.
"The criminalization of Black men and boys and the historic trend of painting them as aggressors have time and again led to deadly and heartbreaking circumstances," Clyburn said in a statement. "Carmack-Belton has since been declared innocent, but his supposed crime of shoplifting a bottle of water should not have cost him his life. I pray justice is swift."
Chow's race in court records is listed as Asian.
Balloons, flowers, water bottles and a sign that says "Justice for King Cyrus" have been placed where the teen fell.
Several dozen people gathered at the store Monday for a peaceful vigil that included pouring water on the ground, spelling out "Cyrus" with the empty bottles and a sign taped to the locked door reading "Water or Life? Which means more?"
But after dark, deputies said a different group spray-painted the store with "Cyrus" and "14," broke windows and started stealing beer, cigarettes and other merchandise. Lott said when they find the people he called looters, they will be charged.
The entire gas station is now behind yellow crime scene tape. Deputies put a portable surveillance unit with cameras in the parking lot. A sign reading "Justice 4 Cyrus" leans against the sign advertising the gas price.
Title basically says it all. I'm travelling for work, and at the end of the trip I'm taking on a few days for vacation since they sent me to Europe. I want to do a ton of sghtseeing and attractions while I'm there during the days, and company is always seriously appreciated. Especially if they have cool ideas for interesting stuff that I don't know about. I also wanted to do some nightclubbing and it seems like it would feel really awkward to do alone, not to mention the risk of being drunk in a place I don't speak the language and am unfamiliar with while alone.
I'm going to Berlin and Prague if that's relevant, and I'll have a rental car. 28M from USA.
So far my best idea has been "just stay at a hostel and hope for the best"
I've been racking my brain recently trying to figure out where I should do a honeymoon with my soon to be wife this upcoming mid October.
Unfortunately because she's in the education field, she'll only be able to get a week off after the wedding, and since it's a Saturday wedding, that leaves the total length as 5-6 nights.
I've bounced around a few strong contenders, but have struggled with trying to optimize cost of getting there, effort in getting there, cost of staying there, and quality of the location.
We'd been considering Rome for 3 nights and Positano for 3 nights, but after a recent Europe trip, decided we would want to stay in 1 location for the duration and make sure we focus on relaxing first, not tours and culture site seeing.
With that in mind we considered the full duration in Positano, but it seems there is a high effort to getting there, flying into either Rome or Naples and having to take some combination of train and ferry. And the round trip price of flying into Naples seems like it would run 1250-1500$ for nonstops, and of course Positano would be quite expensive to stay in.
We would consider somewhere in the Caribbean which would have less cost and effort in travelling, but since it's the hurricane/rainy season, we're not particularly wanting to risk that. I'd love to do Saint Lucia, but looking at the weather it seems like it's quite rainy and only sunny ~30% of the time in October.
One new candidate entered the picture, which is Crete. This would be a similar cost to flying into Naples, and a little higher effort to get there having to catch a connecting flight, but it seems with the quality and options of hotel/resorts, our money would go a lot further than Positano. I also like the idea of nice beaches to relax on, which Positano does not apparently have. And spending half of our budget on flights to only stay somewhere for 5 nights is a hard pill to swallow, even if we could get a nice place to stay with the remainder of our budget.
Our budget is 5-6k. We have about 1000$ worth of points each on Capitol One Venture and Chase Sapphire Preferred we'd also like to apply towards this trip, making our total out of pocket cost in the 3-4k range.
Does r/travel have any suggestions on what would make the most sense for us?
